    Art Classes at Walnut Studios are taught by Walnut Studios Artistic Director Ilene Sova.
    Ilene Sova has an honours BFA from the University of Ottawa and a Masters in Painting and Drawing from the University of Windsor. Sova has an extensive arts educational programming background with over 15 years experience in Canada and the US. Her most recent experiences include the coordinator position in the department of Community Educational Programming at Harbourfront Centre. She has also worked at The Toronto School of Art, and is presently employed at OCADU as an instructor in the department of Liberal Studies. Sova is also an active practicing artist. Her work has been shown various solo shows and has been featured in several print, online and television media outlets.

    This is an introductory class for someone who wants to learn the basics of painting what they see. A beginners class in painting which covers; tonal values, brush strokes, colour theory, and under painting. This course is perfect for the person who may have painted in high school and wants to "get back into it" with basic step by step instruction.

    This is an introductory class for someone who wants to learn the basics of Drawing What They See. In this class the student will learn to draw using the step by step methods of the old Masters. Perfect for someone who has never picked up a pencil or for someone who wants to improve their abilities with representation, proportion, contour drawing, blind contour, still life, shading, and charcoal techniques.

    For someone who wants to learn to paint the human face and create a painting of a family member or friend using the techniques of the old Masters. Or someone who wants to paint a landscape working from a favourite photograph. Under painting, drawing basics, tonal values, colour mixing, brushstrokes and composition will be covered in the course.

    For someone who has taken the Introduction to Portrait Painting and wants to continue mastering the portrait. The course will cover composition, conceptual content, incorporating colour into the flesh tones, and improving drawing accuracy. Working with oil will be an option if the student chooses. The course will culminate with a self portrait.

    Private or group lessons for portfolio preparation. The instructor will work through the portfolio expectations with you and help you pick and choose the appropriate images for your appointment with the college or university. For life drawing requirements a model can be arranged and lessons on life drawing provided. Also, the instructor can provide you with interview preparation and assist you in the overall professional presentation of your artwork.
  • private lessons 

    Booked privately per student according to schedule $30/hr

    Private lessons are available with instructors at the studio. Students have booked these private lessons for help with specific projects, portfolio preparation or to improve specific skills. One on one lessons can be booked with Ilene directly by emailing her.
